The 38th Annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert

The 38th annual Friends of John Coltrane Memorial Concert (fJCMC) in collaboration with the Northeastern Center for the Arts, presents the 2015 John Coltraine memorial Concert, ORNETE ‘N’ TRANE. The first memorial concert was performed in Boston in 1977, the 10th year anniversary of Coltrane’s death. The annual Friends of John Coltrane Memorial Concert has a tradition of presenting world-class musicians and this year is no exception.

ORNETTE ‘N ‘TRANE will be performed by the John Coltrane Memorial Ensemble, featuring Boston based master jazz musicians Carl Atkins, Billy Buss, Jeff Galindo, Laszlo Gardony, Yoron Israel, John Lockwood, Jason Palmer, Rick Stepton, Stan Strickland, and Bobby Tynes and Leonard Brown. Performances will be hosted by WGBH’s Eric Jackson. The John Coltrane Memorial Concert is produced by Leonard Brown, retired Associate Professor of Music & African American Studies and Emmett G. Price III, Associate Professor of Music and former chair of the Department of African American Studies at Northeastern.

The 38th John Coltrane Memorial Concert (JCMC) will be a tribute to the great legacies of creative music pioneered by Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. The decision by presenter Friends of John Coltrane Memorial Concert (fJCMC) to link Coltrane and Coleman was spurred on by Ornette Coleman’s death earlier this year. It is well-known that both Coltrane and Coleman are considered some of the most advanced and innovative musicians of the 20th and early 21st century, both having been significantly influenced by Charlie Parker.

Ornette Coleman had significant impact and influence on the development of John Coltrane’s musical concepts in the 1950’s and 1960’s as related to harmonics, composition and improvisation that were often labeled “free jazz “or “avante garde.” Coltrane had private lessons with Coleman during the late 1950’s. The 38th JCMC will celebrate the powerful musical legacies of these two giants and will feature an all-star ensemble performing new arrangements of some of Coleman’s compositions that were recorded by Coltrane, as well as innovative interpretations of other Coltrane works. The repertoire will include Coleman’s “The Blessing” and “The Invisible” as well as Coltrane compositions including “Lazy Bird,” “Leo” and “Peace On Earth.”
